In his teaching Bob Curtis combines classical ballet and modern dance technique with movements taken from African Dance and complex rhythmic structures. Thus he creates a very organic style which he calls Afro Contemporary Dance. Body awareness and control are gained through stretching and alignment exercises, isolation of body parts and movements initiated in the pelvis. Though his classes concentrate on technique he allows the student to experiment with movement, reflecting the original idea of dance as a playful exploration of the world. The across the floor part of his classes consist of choreographic sequences of Afro movements combined with elements from contemporary dance. All his classes are with live percussion.
