African Dance
Traditional African Dance is defined by complex rhythms, movements initiating in the pelvis, and an earthbound quality. All these characteristics are at the centre of Bob Curtis’ choreographies and teaching. However, due to his comprehensive training in classical ballet (with Balanchine), Modern Dance (with Martha Graham and José Limon) and Afro Dance (with Katherine Dunham) he has developed a method which incorporates elements of all these techniques in a unique style which he calls Afro Contemporary.
His choreographies are dynamic rituals which correspond with modern urban life. His teaching is a combination of body awareness training and dance technique. Bob Curtis is a truly contemporary person whose reflection on tradition is not veiled by nostalgia but is a forward movement leading his audience and students toward the future.
